Going to try to gather all of the Motorsports events here, rather than under the cities.
Although I have few records, my parents took us kids to drag boat racing, motorcycles, drags (we were very local to the Fremont Drag Strip in Northern California). Then in my early teens my brother took me to Laguna Seca .Watched George Folmer and Mark Donahue race the Porsche 917 at Laguna one rainy weekend and was hooked.
Hello, My name is Bill. I grew up in west San Jose and My first race at Laguna Seca was also the 1972 Can Am race. I was 17 at the time and got a few friends to go with me having never been to any races before anywhere really. I remember getting military tickets at $8 bucks for a three day pass. I was hooked in the first hour the cars were out . Little did I realize how fortunate I was to witness this great series right when the Porsche-Audi machine began its assult on the series. Later in about 2010 maybe at Fernley raceway in Nevada I got to speak to George Folmer who was driving someones M-6a I believe. That was fun as it was very low key. I talked to him about Can-Am and F 5000 and about in I believe 1974 they had during the Can-Am race season match races at some tracks between two UOP F1 cars and their two UOP Can-Am cars. Great fun that was to watch ! Anyway , though it was the beginning of the end of the series it was great fun. I remember at the track in 1972 they were handing out foam cups with a few salt tablts and a ten pack of L & M cigarettes , matches, and a towelette I believe. I remember the wood slat fences you could lean against outside the track. I remember distinctly leaning on a fence on the outside of the old turn seven with a friend drinking some very cheap beer as only a seventeen year old can . I went on to attend most big races at the track untill 1990 or so. I also saw many races at sears point and long beach F1 races and even saw Giacomo Augostini race Kenny Roberts at Ontario motor speedway in I believe 1973 and also carlsbad,ca. when the Gp bikes were there. Of course Fremont drag strip with the drag races and the motocross and gocart and off road tracks. Anyway I was fumbling around and saw your link about your first Laguna Race. Sounds like you’ve been to many races all over the world. Sounds like you’ve been having way to much fun. Keep it up !
Bill, thanks very much for the comment. Sounds like we were both at Laguna for many of the same races. We tapered off our attendance in the ’90’s but have since started going again. I remember those packs of L&M cigarettes too. Too funny. Your comment has gotten me motivated to get off my butt and get more of the archive photos I have posted.
Mark, Posting photos would be great. I still have some but it would take alot of digging to find. One thing I started at that 1972 race was Laguna Tuna. It was just a small group of friends of mine that started hanging out at the races together and joking around with the name. It later turned into a bit more than that and eventually got out of hand with to many people from outside the group causing to many problems at the old turn 3 campsite so we just ended it. It was great fun most of the time though.
